"Of course it's more dangerous," he said, surprised. Even if they didn't strictly abide by the law, they had to stick to their morals. If anything, that was much more difficult. The law was so black-and-white, but there were plenty of questions and situations that would result in moral conundrums. Plus, there were all the people that they'd have to fight, people who didn't share the same opinions on right and wrong and probably had better resources, too. It was never going to be easy. But Chris had know that from the beginning. It was part of what made the whole thing more interesting. The odds stacked against them, the world more interested in amorality, society holding itself together by fraying threads... It was just another puzzle to be solved. One of the most difficult puzzles he might ever have the chance to solve, with rules he didn't understand. But a puzzle nevertheless.
"It's a question of lateral thinking," he said, nodding to himself. It was yet another reason why the disappearance of the old heroes was such a shame. They had to have been masters of lateral thinking by the end. He'd have to do more research. To some extent, the past was always applicable to the present. He was sure he could learn a few things.
"I'll be careful," he added as an afterthought. He thought that he was, all things considered. It was just so difficult to stop running into the heat of things when he knew he might be able to make a difference. "You should be careful, too." Chris hadn't gotten the implications of what she had said, not really. But he hadn't forgotten that the whole reason they were here was because of that duffel bag she had stolen from the police. It didn't take a genius to work out that she was up to something dangerous and less than legal. He thought she'd be a real hero eventually, even if she had to take a few dodgy paths to get there. But still, the words stood.
